British Airways Announces Return to Melbourne with Daily London Flights

British Airways is set to return to Melbourne for the first time since 2006, launching a new daily, year-round service between Melbourne and London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur from January 2027.

The new route marks an important expansion of British Airways’ Australia network and will give travellers greater choice when travelling between the UK and Australia. The service will operate daily from 11 January 2027, with flights connecting Melbourne and London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur.

The new Melbourne service will complement British Airways’ existing connection between Sydney and London, strengthening the airline’s presence in Australia and providing additional opportunities for leisure and business travellers travelling between the two countries.

British Airways returns to Melbourne

British Airways will operate the new London Heathrow–Kuala Lumpur–Melbourne service using its Boeing 787 aircraft. The route will operate daily and year-round, with the first outbound sector from London scheduled from 9 January 2027 and the return Melbourne service commencing on 11 January 2027.

The service will provide a convenient one-stop connection between London and Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur, offering travellers a choice of four cabins across the Boeing 787: World Traveller, World Traveller Plus, Club World and First.

The new Melbourne service will be operated by British Airways’ Boeing 787 fleet, giving customers the choice of four cabins designed to suit different travel preferences and budgets.

World Traveller – Economy Class

World Traveller is British Airways’ long-haul economy cabin, providing travellers with a comfortable option for the journey between Australia and the UK. Customers can expect a dedicated seat, inflight entertainment and complimentary food and drinks during the flight, making it well suited to travellers looking for a practical long-haul experience.

World Traveller Plus – Premium Economy

For customers looking for additional comfort, World Traveller Plus offers British Airways’ premium economy experience. The cabin provides a more spacious environment than World Traveller, with wider seats and increased personal space. It offers an enhanced experience for travellers who want to make a long-haul journey more comfortable without travelling in business class.

Club World – Business Class

Club World is British Airways’ long-haul business class cabin, designed for customers seeking a more premium experience throughout their journey. Depending on the aircraft configuration, customers can benefit from lie-flat seating, allowing them to rest more comfortably on the long journey between Australia and the UK. Business Class customers also have access to British Airways’ premium airport services, including dedicated check-in and lounge access where applicable.

First – First Class

First offers British Airways’ most premium cabin experience, combining additional space, privacy and personalised service. Customers travelling in First can enjoy a more exclusive experience both at the airport and in the air, with premium dining and enhanced service throughout their journey.

Strengthening UK–Australia connections

The return to Melbourne represents British Airways’ renewed commitment to Australia and its long-standing links with the UK. The airline has a history of connecting the two countries and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025.

The new Melbourne route will become British Airways’ second service from Australia, complementing its established Sydney–London connection. By adding Melbourne to its network, the airline will offer customers more choice when planning journeys between the UK and Australia, while also supporting tourism, business and cultural links between the two countries.

The service via Kuala Lumpur will also provide an additional connection point for travellers, with the route linking London Heathrow, Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne on a daily basis.

The return to Melbourne comes as part of British Airways’ wider investment in its long-haul network, responding to demand and expanding the destinations available to customers travelling from the UK.
